- an event occurred in the vehicle where the battery controller is unable to properly balance the battery cells and this needs to be done with an external device
- the module to be used has different voltages on the cells or a single cell replacement is possible, balancing should be performed
- charging/discharging individual cells in the module allows checking if any of them are defective
